Bengal Weather Update: Winter is pretty much done with Bengal since mid-February. The Alipore Meteorological Department is predicting some rain in South Bengal, including Kolkata, starting Wednesday. A few districts might even see rain accompanied by thunder. North Bengal is also expecting some light rain.
On Monday, Kolkata’s minimum temperature was 23.2 degrees Celsius, and it ticked up a bit on Tuesday to 23.6 degrees, which is about 4.9 degrees above normal. The high for the day is expected to be around 30 to 31 degrees.
A thunderstorm warning has been issued for Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, and Bankura on Wednesday, with a yellow alert in place for those areas. On Thursday, rain with thunder is likely in North 24 Parganas, two Midnapore districts, Jhargram, Purulia, two Burdwan, Birbhum, and Nadia.
Possibilities of rain
Additionally, Alipore mentioned that light rain could pop up in almost all of South Bengal’s districts until next Monday. However, there shouldn’t be any major changes in the minimum temperature across the state over the next five days.
good conditions for rain in the southern part of Bengal
Alipore also noted that a new western storm is rolling in on Tuesday, creating good conditions for rain in South Bengal. Light rain might hit the northern districts too, with Darjeeling and Kalimpong possibly seeing some rain and even light snowfall on Tuesday. The rest of the northern districts, like Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar, are expected to start getting light rain from Wednesday.
Northern districts
On top of that, dense fog will blanket the three northern districts in the morning. Alipore warned that Darjeeling, North Dinajpur, and South Dinajpur will experience thick fog on Wednesday morning, reducing visibility to about 50 meters in those areas.
