iPhone 17 Air: Apple’s Thinnest iPhone Ever

Of the new models, the iPhone 17 Air is generating the most excitement. Apple is said to make it the thinnest iPhone yet, with a body that ranges from 5.5mm to 6.25mm significantly thinner than the iPhone 6, which is currently the thinnest at 6.9mm. With a 6.6-inch screen, the iPhone 17 Air will be priced between the Pro and Pro Max models, taking the place of the discontinued Plus model. Its extremely thin build may make it as thin as the iPad Air, creating a new standard for smartphone looks.

120Hz ProMotion Display for All Models

For the first time, every iPhone 17 model is expected to feature ProMotion technology with a 120Hz refresh rate. Previously exclusive to the Pro models, this upgrade made possible by LTPO OLED displays will ensure smoother scrolling, better responsiveness, and improved video playback across the lineup. Apple may also introduce an always-on display for all variants, though it remains uncertain whether the standard iPhone 17 and 17 Air will receive this feature.

New Camera Design and Enhanced Sensors

Apple is said to be dramatically changing its camera systems. The iPhone 17 Air and 17 Pro models are said to have a new rectangular camera island instead of the traditional square bump. While the iPhone 17 Air will have a single-lens camera, the Pro models will still have a triple-lens.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max may get a huge boost with a 48-megapixel telephoto lens, a huge jump from the existing 12MP sensor. All iPhone 17 devices may also get a new 24-megapixel front camera with a six-element lens for better selfies and video calls.

A19 Chip and Apple’s In-House 5G Modem

Performance will be taken to new levels with Apple’s latest A19 chip, developed on a more advanced 3nm process. The Pro lineups will feature the A19 Pro chip, offering improved efficiency, quicker multitasking, and enhanced battery life.

iPhone 17 Air could also be the first iPhone to incorporate Apple’s internal 5G modem, instead of Qualcomm technology. Although it will not provide mmWave 5G support, it is anticipated to offer up to 4Gbps speeds, ensuring a seamless connectivity experience.

Improved Wireless Features and Toughness

Apple will debut Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3 throughout the iPhone 17 series. These will deliver faster speeds, reduced latency, and greater energy efficiency, enhancing wireless activities for gaming, video streaming, and file transfer. Apple’s in-house-designed Wi-Fi chip also may optimize performance further.

Durability is another area of improvement, with reports suggesting a tougher, anti-reflective display coating. This new layer is expected to be more scratch-resistant and durable than the current Ceramic Shield, reducing glare and enhancing visibility under bright conditions.

The Future of eSIM-Only iPhones

With Apple’s removal of the physical SIM tray on iPhones in the U.S., the iPhone 17 series might roll out eSIM-only versions to additional markets. The iPhone 17 Air, specifically, is said to use eSIM exclusively because it is so ultra-thin. It is unknown yet if this move will carry over to India and Europe, though.

With all these supposedly impending upgrades, the iPhone 17 series would potentially introduce some of the most exciting developments in years. With the release date closing in, Apple enthusiasts can expect even more to be known regarding what is now shaping up to be one of the most hotly awaited smartphone launches in 2025.
