Getting pimples with oily skin is a common problem, but you can also get pimples with dry skin, which makes your skin look oily. Paula’s Choice can provide you with a set of tips to follow and a set of products to use to combat both problems at the same time.

Hormonal changes

Just because you’re no longer a teenager doesn’t mean you’ll never have to deal with pimples and blemishes again. Likewise, just because you had (or had) a few pimples as a teenager doesn’t mean you won’t have them as an adult. Hormonal changes (especially in women) can cause pimples to appear at any age.

The wrong skincare routine

If you follow the wrong skincare routine, your skin condition tends to get worse, whether you have oily skin, dry skin or acne-prone skin. Harsh soaps, scrubs, brushes and skincare products that contain alcohol and irritating ingredients can damage your skin. For both day and night, it is better to use a light product (for example a gel), that contains soothing ingredients, instead of a cream with a rich texture. In fact, the ingredients used to give a product a rich or thick texture could further clog your pores. In addition, it is essential for your skin to apply sunscreen daily .

As if it wasn’t difficult enough, many cosmetic brands sell anti-pimple products that contain irritating ingredients that dry out your skin. These only make matters worse. Watch out for ingredients like alcohol, menthol, witch hazel, peppermint, eucalyptus, and sulfur.

Don’t overdo the application of your skincare products

Research has shown that products containing retinolsalicylic acid (BHA), and possibly benzoyl peroxide are highly effective at fighting pimples. But don’t overdo it with these products—more isn’t always better. The Clear collection’s pimple-fighting products are gentle yet effective. If you find that these products tend to dry out your skin, we recommend applying them less frequently or adding an extra step, like a serum. If you want to try a product with benzoyl peroxide (available over the counter at your local drugstore), start with the lowest concentration available to see how your skin reacts. If you’re hypersensitive to benzoyl peroxide, our Clear Daily Clarifying Treatment is a good alternative.

A good skincare routine

For dry skin that also has pimples, it is best to use light creams (gels), toners, serums and lotions, which are rich in antioxidants, regenerating and soothing substances and calming ingredients. Apply these products one after the other for best results. The products we have just mentioned are suitable for dry skin with pimples. For exceptional results, you can combine Clear products (for pimples) with products for dry skin, such as Resist Anti-Aging Antioxidant Serum , Skin Recovery Night Cream or Resist Anti-Aging Barrier Repair Night Cream with Retinol .
