Cutting nails – a task that we do regularly, but how many of us really know how to do it properly? Cutting , filing or clipping – what is the best method and how often should we actually shape our nails ? There are a few things to consider to ensure that nails are properly shortened and look well-groomed. Munich nail expert Sonja Gebauer clears up common misunderstandings and explains how to cut nails properly .

The biggest mistakes when cutting nails

According to Sonja Gebauer, one of the most common mistakes is cutting into the nail fold or cutting the nail too short. The expert runs her own nail studio, Foot & Hand Spa, in Munich and, therefore, deals with the correct cutting and shaping of nails on a daily basis.

Cutting short nails even shorter can lead to painful infections and increase the risk of ingrown nails – both fingernails and toenails . Instead, the nail should always be left in its natural shape to grow healthily.

How often should nails be cut or filed?

The frequency of nail cutting or filing also depends on individual factors. “Toenails are cut and filed every four to six weeks,” says the expert. Since nails grow about three millimetres a month, the rhythm varies depending on the season and age. Fingernails, however, can be filed weekly, depending on how short or long you want them to be.

The right time to trim your nails

It is often said that nail care is best after a shower because the nails are then nice and soft. But is that really true? For thick toenails, Gebauer recommends cutting them after a shower when the nail is soft. Fingernails, on the other hand, should be filed when dry to maintain their stability. And: Be sure to apply cream or use oil on moist and warm skin to keep the cuticles soft and supple.

With this expert tip, you will find the nail shape that suits you

Oval, square, stiletto or almond? There are many nail shapes that are currently in fashion. “However, the given trend is not always optimal for your own nail,” says the Munich nail salon owner. Her tip: “The nail shape is individual and is determined by the nail bed.” More precisely, this means using the natural curve of the nail bed as a guideline and choosing the shape that best suits both your everyday life and your aesthetic. So it’s worth considering the individual shape instead of just following the latest trends.

If you are unsure, you can take a closer look at a professional manicure or pedicure : Treatment by nail professionals can contribute to healthy nails, well-groomed cuticles and the optimal nail shape – even if you only treat yourself to this little luxury every few months.
