Green smoothies are trendy. But are they really that healthy? Nutritionist Béatrice Chiari is convinced: the green drinks are an enjoyable and easy way to “give” the body a concentrated dose of vital nutrients.

Why does the smoothie have to be green?

The main reason, in addition to the vital substances, is chlorophyll. The green leaf pigment is one of the strongest natural antioxidants (cell-protecting substances). Chlorophyll can bind to harmful substances and “transport” them away, freeing the intercellular space of harmful substances. This relieves the body and has a preventive effect against many diseases.

Is the effect of leafy greens or green smoothies scientifically proven?

Where and how chlorophyll works has not yet been conclusively proven. However, various studies demonstrate its antioxidant, i.e. cell-protecting, effect. In addition, a recent study by Rush University in Chicago showed that green leafy vegetables can prevent dementia. Even if not everything has been proven by long-term studies, it is now undisputed that vegetables and fruit are healthy five portions of fruit and vegetables per day are recommended.

Does a green smoothie have other favorable properties?

Green smoothies also have an alkaline effect due to their high content of leafy vegetables and green plants. This is important because many people today are over-acidic due to the consumption of animal proteins, coffee or alcohol. Green smoothies also regulate blood sugar because they contain little fructose. But one thing is also clear: a single green smoothie is not enough. A lasting effect is particularly noticeable in those who drink green smoothies regularly.

Is a special mixer really necessary?

Yes. The green smoothie must be mixed very finely so that it can reach the small intestine as quickly as possible and take effect there. With a normal hand blender, too many fibers remain in the drink. The disadvantage is that heat and acid in the stomach destroy the sensitive enzymes and vitamins during the digestive process.

What do you mix into a green smoothie?

Basically, any green plant is suitable. Dark green salads, chard or fresh spinach leaves are ideal. Wild herbs should be used sparingly because their ingredients are very potent and can have too strong a detoxifying effect under certain circumstances. Wild garlic, chives, and also types of cabbage, for example, kale, which is so popular in Hollywood – are difficult to taste and less well tolerated by many people. You can add fruit and water as desired. Personally, I always use organic vegetables and fruit so that no pesticides or other questionable substances end up in my smoothie.
