Women pregnant News: Now women can get help in postponing pregnancy to balance their professional and personal life. Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed an injection through which pregnancy can be prevented. This injection can be administered by oneself without consulting a doctor. This is a relief news for those women who want to avoid the stress of pregnancy and want to postpone it for professional or personal reasons.

Success in testing on mice

According to research published in the Nature Chemical Engineering journal, the name of this injection is “Self-aggregating long-acting injectable microcrystals”. This drug remains active in the body slowly and for a long time. In tests conducted on mice, this injection was successful in preventing pregnancy for at least 97 days. Scientists believe that if further improvements are made in the manufacture of this drug, it can be effective for a longer time.

How does this injection work?

This injection is given under the skin after which small crystals are formed. These crystals slowly release hormones which stop the process of releasing eggs in women. This does not make pregnancy possible. This process has been called “SLIM” injection which can be a convenient option for women who live in low-resource areas and where it is difficult to take a pill daily or apply a contraceptive device.

This injection will be helpful in low-resource areas

Study co-author Dr. Giovanni Traverso said that this injection can be especially helpful for women who live in low-resource areas. Here the facilities of contraception and health services are limited. He says that this injection can be a new addition to the traditional family planning options available to women.

Can be used for other medicines too

Scientists also believe that such DIY (Do It Yourself) injections can also be used for other medicines whose effect needs to be maintained for a long time such as in the treatment of HIV, TB, schizophrenia, chronic pain and metabolic diseases.

It is expected from this research that it can be a new and convenient technology of contraception for women which will provide better options for their lifestyle and health in future.
