Pitru Paksha 2024: In Hinduism, Pitru Paksha has a special significance. During Pitru Paksha, every person performs Shradh for his three previous generations (father, grandfather and great grandfather) as well as maternal grandparents.

This day is also the second and last lunar eclipse of the year. The lunar eclipse has occurred today on 18 September at 6.12 am.

This is a partial lunar eclipse. However, for this lunar eclipse, there is no Sutak period. Consequently, India cannot witness this lunar eclipse.

Pitru Paksha 2024 Day 1

The first Shradh takes place on the first day of Pitru Paksha. In such a situation, Pitru Paksha is starting from today on the Pratipada date of Ashwin Shukla and the first Shradh of Pitru Paksha will be performed on this day.

Pratipada Shradh Date and Timing

Pratipada Tithi will begin on September 18 at 08:04 a.m. and conclude on September 19 at 04:19 a.m. At the same time, Pratipada Shradh on this day will be from 11:30 am to 03:30 pm. This means that before the end of the afternoon, you should complete the Pratipada Shradh rituals.

First Day Shradh Muhurat

Kutup Muhurat: September 18, 11:50 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Rohin Muhurat: September 18, 12:39 p.m. to 01:27 p.m.

Afternoon Kaal: From 01:27 p.m. to 03:54 p.m.

Do not eat these things even by mistake

The scriptures advise against consuming meat and alcohol during Pitru Paksha. Doing so makes the ancestors angry. It can also influence the lineage.

Eat no Masoor Dal during Pitru Paksha. Actually, Mars, the planet associated with anger, directly relates to Masoor Dal.

Gram: Gram and things made from it should not be consumed during Pitru Paksha, such as gram flour, gram dal, sweets etc. should not be eaten because these things are not offered to the ancestors.

The scriptures advise against consuming cooked food during Pitru Paksha. In fact, it is believed that the Shradh of ancestors is performed with these rice, in which raw rice can be used.
