About 3,500 projects have been completed under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana in Jammu and Kashmir, providing road facilities to 2,129 villages. This includes 217 bridges. A comprehensive review of the project implementation was conducted in a meeting chaired by Amit Shukla, Joint Secretary of the Union Rural Development Ministry. The focus of the meeting was on ensuring the timely completion of projects, maintaining quality standards, and improving rural connectivity in the region.
The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY Update) began in Jammu and Kashmir in 2001-02 intending to provide all-weather connectivity to rural areas with populations of over 250, as per the 2001 census. So far, a total of 3,742 projects, including 305 bridges, have been approved for Jammu and Kashmir, covering 20,801 km of roads. In addition, 2,140 settlements with populations above 250 have been approved for connectivity.

Officials have shared that 3,429 projects, including 217 bridges, have been completed, with 2,129 of the 2,140 settlements connected. The total expenditure for the projects has been Rs 12,650 crore. In the past five years, special attention has been given to the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana in Jammu and Kashmir, leading to significant improvements in rural connectivity, particularly in remote and hilly areas.
Amit Shukla emphasized the need for a daily monitoring mechanism to meet project deadlines and directed the adherence to quality standards in road construction. He also stated that all Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY Update) projects should be completed within the deadlines set by the ministry. Earlier, on Saturday, the Secretary conducted an on-site inspection of important road and bridge projects under PMGSY in the Jammu region, including the inspection of the Kalas Kulian to Chak Harni road and the bridge construction work on the Jagti Bamyal road.
