Every day in India, lakhs of people travel on national highways or state highways in different vehicles and they have to pay some charges to travel on a good road, which is called toll tax. Toll plazas have been set up at a distance of a few kilometres on state and national highways to collect money for the repair and maintenance of roads. However, the toll fee for every expressway or highway is not the same. But let us tell you about those rules of toll plazas, due to which toll tax can be completely free.

Know the Correct Rules

Each day, millions of vehicles travel on the country’s state and national highways and expressways. Drivers pay toll tax at toll plazas, often facing long queues and delays. However, a rule introduced a few years ago aims to ease this experience.

If you know this rule, you might avoid paying tolls altogether. In the year 2021, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) brought a rule for the convenience of the people. The purpose of this rule was that no vehicle should stop at the toll plaza for more than 10 seconds. If it takes more time than this, then it can go from there without paying the toll.

How Much Delay Is Allowed?

According to the rules of NHAI, if there is a lot of crowd at the toll plaza or one has to wait for more than 10 seconds, then the rule of free toll will be applicable. During this time, if you face any problem, you can contact NHAI’s helpline 1033.

Only if this condition is met…

The National Highway Authority of India states that if there is a long vehicle queue within 100 meters of the toll plaza, no toll tax will be charged. However, this applies only if the yellow strip is visible within the 100-meter radius. If your vehicle is beyond this strip, you won’t have to pay toll tax. Additionally, you can avoid paying tolls if the toll plaza’s fast-tag machine is not working.
