Is Nazmul Hossain Shanto standing behind the wicket this time to save his career? No, that’s not the case. In fact, he was asked to take on the wicketkeeping role due to the team combination. It’s a masterstroke by captain Tamim Iqbal. Shanto has done an excellent job behind the stumps.
Mushfiqur Rahim is injured and not fit enough to take on wicketkeeping duties. Young Pritam Kumar has once again failed to perform with the bat. Now, a wicketkeeper is needed. This time, Fortune Barishal has made a unique decision: Nazmul Hossain Shanto has been assigned the wicketkeeping role.
Shanto’s Impressive Wicketkeeping Performance
Looking at Shanto (Nazmul Hossain Shanto), it’s hard to tell that he is new to the wicketkeeping role. No major mistakes were observed from Shanto (Nazmul Hossain Shanto) behind the stumps. Therefore, Fortune Barishal’s decision can be regarded as a wise one, especially considering the challenge posed by Shaheen Afridi’s fast deliveries. The wicketkeeper’s job is never easy, particularly in such circumstances.

Becoming a wicketkeeper unexpectedly is not a rare occurrence in Bangladesh cricket. In the early days of Test cricket, Mehrab Hossain Opi took on the role behind the stumps for a while. Later, players such as Shahriar Hossain Bidyut and Rajin Saleh filled that position. Surprisingly, even Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah Riyad have kept wickets in Tests. Riyad also has a stumping to his name as a keeper.

An interesting fact is that Imrul Kayes took five catches in a single Test inning as a wicketkeeper and that too in challenging conditions in New Zealand. Recently, Mehedi Hasan Miraz also stood behind the stumps for a period in limited-overs cricket. In ODIs, Hannan Sarkar and Junaid Siddiqui have also been used as makeshift wicketkeepers.
