New Delhi: The Champions Trophy 2025 has concluded, with India defeating New Zealand in the final to claim the prestigious title. The Indian team has returned home with the trophy, but controversy has erupted regarding the award distribution ceremony after the final.
Many former Pakistani cricketers and fans raised concerns over the absence of any PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) official on stage during the presentation ceremony. Questions were asked as to why, despite being the host nation, no PCB representative was present during the trophy presentation.
ICC Responds to the Controversy
In response to the controversy, the ICC spokesperson spoke to Geo TV, stating that arrangements were made to invite PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi to the award ceremony, but he did not attend. According to ICC rules, only the head of the host board (such as the Chairman, Vice-Chairman, or CEO) can be invited to the ceremony. Even if other board officials are present at the venue, they cannot be part of the stage proceedings.
This clarification came after former Pakistani cricketer Wasim Akram expressed his disappointment over PCB’s absence on stage. He remarked, “The Chairman was unwell, but no one from PCB was present. Sumair Ahmed and Usman were there, but they were not seen on stage. We were the hosts of the Champions Trophy, so whoever was representing the Chairman should have been there. Were they not invited?”
India Wins the Champions Trophy, Pakistan Faces Early Exit
As the host nation, Pakistan had a disappointing tournament, crashing out in the group stage. The team lost its first two matches, and the final group match was washed out due to rain, leading to their elimination.
Meanwhile, India dominated the tournament, winning all their group-stage matches. In the semi-final, Rohit Sharma’s team defeated Australia, securing a spot in the final. India then clinched the Champions Trophy title by defeating New Zealand by four wickets in the final match.
This victory adds another major ICC trophy to India’s collection, solidifying their position as one of the strongest teams in world cricket.
