England coach Brendon McCullum, the father of the aggressive batting style ‘Bazball’ in Test cricket, is now with the team for the first time as the head coach of the white-ball team. McCullum had been the head coach of the Test team for a long time, but the England Cricket Board has now ended the split coaching system and handed over the responsibility for all three formats to him. This new chapter of his career will begin with the first T20 match in Kolkata on January 22. However, on January 20, he surprised everyone by stating that his team would play cautiously in the limited-overs series against India.
McCullum’s Success as England Test Coach
Brendon McCullum has been the coach of the England Test team since May 2022, leading the team to several successes. Speaking to reporters in Kolkata, McCullum said, “I know this tour will be challenging as we are facing a strong Indian team, but I am confident our team will adopt a cautious style of cricket.” This raises questions about whether England, known for its aggressive batting in Test cricket, will adopt a more thoughtful approach in T20s.
First T20 at Eden Gardens
The first match of the five-match T20 series between India and England will be held at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday. Following the T20 series, the teams will play a three-match ODI series, which is seen as a dress rehearsal for the Champions Trophy, scheduled to begin on February 19 in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates. This will be the final series for both teams before the ICC event.
McCullum Sees Series as Exciting Challenge
McCullum described the upcoming series as both “great and exciting,” stating, “We knew about it two months ago, and it is going to be fantastic.”

Focus Beyond Winning Every Match
The Kiwi legend emphasized that winning every match is not the sole objective. He remarked, “You are not going to win every game, right? We are highly competitive and want success, but in the dressing room, our conversation is about getting the best out of the talent we have. It’s about uniting the team and leveraging complementary skills.”
Confidence in England’s Strengths
Highlighting his team’s capabilities, McCullum said, “We have a batting lineup more potent than any in the world, great spinners, excellent fielders, and fast bowlers. It’s about using these strengths, enjoying the game, and maximizing opportunities.”
