New Delhi: The 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is set to kick off on Saturday, March 22. The opening match will be played at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, where Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will face off against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). This season, 10 teams will battle it out in 74 matches over 65 days, with the grand final scheduled for May 25.
Over the years, IPL has seen numerous records being set and broken. However, some records remain unchallenged, standing as milestones in cricket history. Here are five of the biggest IPL records that still remain unbroken:
1. Virat Kohli’s Highest Runs in a Single Season – 973 Runs
Virat Kohli, the star batter of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), delivered a historic performance in the 2016 IPL season, scoring a staggering 973 runs. This record remains untouched to this day.
In that season, Kohli scored four centuries and seven half-centuries, dominating every bowling attack. The closest attempt to break this record was made by Shubman Gill, who scored 890 runs in IPL 2023, but Kohli’s record is yet to be surpassed.
2. Kohli-De Villiers’ Historic Partnership – 229 Runs
IPL’s biggest-ever partnership also belongs to RCB, featuring two legends – Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.
In IPL 2016, against Gujarat Lions, the duo stitched together a 229-run stand. Kohli scored 109 runs off 55 balls, while De Villiers smashed 129 runs off 52 balls. To this day, no batting pair has come close to breaking this record partnership.
3. Chris Gayle’s Fastest Century – 30 Balls
One of the most destructive innings in IPL history was played by Chris Gayle in IPL 2013. Playing for RCB, Gayle scored a century in just 30 balls against Pune Warriors India.
This remains the fastest century in IPL and T20 cricket history. In that match, Gayle went on to score 175 runs, hitting 13 fours and 17 sixes. No player has been able to break this blazing record yet.
4. Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Fastest Fifty – 13 Balls
In IPL 2023, Rajasthan Royals’ young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal shattered the record for the fastest IPL half-century, reaching 50 in just 13 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders.
Before Jaiswal, this record was held by KL Rahul (14 balls). However, with his aggressive stroke play, Jaiswal rewrote history and set a new benchmark.
5. Most Sixes in an IPL Innings – Chris Gayle’s 17 Sixes
Chris Gayle holds yet another IPL record – the most sixes in a single innings.
In the same legendary 175-run knock in IPL 2013, Gayle smashed 17 sixes against Pune Warriors India. No batsman has come close to hitting more sixes in a single IPL innings, making this one of the most difficult records to break.
Will IPL 2025 Witness New Records?
As IPL 2025 begins, fans are excited to see if any of these long-standing records will be broken. While breaking records set by Kohli, Gayle, and De Villiers won’t be easy, the league has always been full of surprises.
With the opening clash between KKR and RCB, cricket lovers are eager to see which players will shine this season. Will a new superstar emerge and set new records? Only time will tell!
