New Delhi: MS Dhoni has been under fire lately for his batting position in IPL 2024. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend was heavily trolled after coming in at No. 9 during the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), which many considered a key reason for CSK’s defeat. In the recent game against Rajasthan Royals, Dhoni batted at No. 7 but couldn’t prevent CSK from losing by 6 runs. Even in the previous season, Dhoni was frequently seen batting at No. 7 or 8, raising concerns among fans and experts. Amidst the ongoing criticism, CSK’s head coach Stephen Fleming has now issued a major statement regarding Dhoni’s batting position.

MS Dhoni’s Body Is Not the Same Anymore, Says Fleming

Following CSK’s defeat against Rajasthan Royals, head coach Stephen Fleming addressed the media, shedding light on the former skipper’s fitness issues. Fleming revealed that Dhoni’s knees are no longer as strong as they used to be, making it difficult for him to bat for 10 overs consistently.

“MS Dhoni decides his own batting position. His body and knees aren’t as fit as they once were. He is still moving well, but there are challenges. Playing an extended innings of 10 overs is no longer an easy task for him. That’s why he assesses the situation and decides what’s best for the team. Against Rajasthan Royals, he came in earlier than usual, but he also allows other players to take charge when needed,” said Fleming.

Is MS Dhoni Becoming a Burden for CSK?

At 43 years old, Dhoni plays only a limited number of balls in a match, raising questions about his role in the CSK squad. Addressing concerns over whether Dhoni has become a liability, Fleming dismissed the speculation, emphasizing Dhoni’s immense value to the team.

“I said this last year as well—Dhoni’s importance to CSK is unparalleled. He is a leader, and his role as a wicketkeeper is crucial. Sending him at No. 9 or 10 is something that rarely happens. He evaluates the match situation around the 13-14 over mark and makes decisions accordingly,” Fleming added.

Despite growing concerns over Dhoni’s batting position and fitness, CSK continues to rely on his leadership and experience. However, with the team struggling in IPL 2024, the management might need to rethink strategies to make the best use of the legendary cricketer in the remainder of the tournament.
