New Delhi: Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami has once again found himself at the center of controversy, this time over his daughter celebrating Holi. Days after being criticized for not observing Roza during Ramadan, Shami is now facing backlash after a video of his daughter, Aaira, playing Holi with her mother surfaced on social media.

The controversy erupted after Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi, president of the ‘All India Muslim Jamaat,’ raised objections, calling the act against Sharia law. In a video statement released on Saturday evening, Maulana Razvi stated, “If a child unknowingly plays Holi, it is understandable. However, if a child is mature and still participates in Holi, it goes against Sharia.”

Religious Debate Over Shami’s Daughter Playing Holi

Maulana Razvi emphasized that he had earlier advised Mohammed Shami to follow Islamic principles. Despite this, his daughter’s Holi celebration was publicly shared, reigniting the debate. He further urged Shami and his family to refrain from engaging in activities that contradict Islamic teachings.

“Holi is a major Hindu festival, and while we respect all religions, Muslims should avoid participating in it. If someone knowingly violates Sharia by playing Holi, it is considered a sin,” Maulana Razvi added.

This isn’t the first time Shami has faced religious criticism. On March 6, during the Champions Trophy match against Australia, he was targeted for drinking an energy drink while fasting. Maulana Razvi had then condemned him for not observing Roza and called him a “sinner” in the eyes of Sharia.

Shami’s Silence Amid Growing Criticism

Despite the growing controversy, Mohammed Shami has not responded to the criticism. The debate over personal choices versus religious beliefs continues to spark discussions on social media, with fans and religious leaders divided over the issue.

As Holi 2025 celebrations continue across India, this incident has once again ignited the age-old debate about religious freedom, personal choice, and societal expectations. Whether Shami addresses the controversy or chooses to stay silent, the discussion around religious boundaries in personal lives is unlikely to die down anytime soon.
