New Delhi: The 2008 IPL champions, Rajasthan Royals, are all set for the new season of IPL 2025. Over the past few years, the team has shown glimpses of brilliance but hasn’t been able to clinch another title, leaving fans hoping for a breakthrough. As the season approaches, captain Sanju Samson has joined the squad, but uncertainty remains over his role behind the stumps.
Sanju Samson’s Finger Surgery Raises Concerns
Sanju Samson will continue leading Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2025. However, the major concern is whether he will be able to take on wicketkeeping duties. During India’s T20 series against England in February 2025, Samson suffered a finger injury after being hit by a delivery from England’s fast bowler Jofra Archer. This injury led to surgery, raising doubts about his ability to keep wickets. Though he has now recovered, the franchise may take a cautious approach regarding his role behind the stumps.
Dhruv Jurel – The Backup Wicketkeeping Option
To tackle this uncertainty, Rajasthan Royals have a strong backup in Dhruv Jurel. A promising wicketkeeper-batsman, Jurel could step in if Samson decides to focus solely on his batting. Given the long IPL season, the Royals might opt for a rotation strategy, allowing Samson to ease back into his usual role. However, if required, he might resume wicketkeeping later in the tournament.
Rajasthan Royals’ Journey in Recent IPL Seasons
Rajasthan Royals have shown promise but failed to go all the way in the past few seasons. In IPL 2024, the team won 8 out of 14 league matches, making it to the playoffs but failing to advance further. In IPL 2023, the team finished at 5th place, missing out on the playoffs. In IPL 2022, Rajasthan had a brilliant campaign, reaching the final but falling short of winning the title.
