Rohit Sharma on Champions Trophy 2025: After winning two ICC trophies at the Wankhede Stadium – the 2007 T20 World Cup as a team member and the 2024 T20 World Cup as captain – India’s skipper Rohit Sharma on Sunday promised that his team will do their best to bring the 2025 Champions Trophy to the iconic venue for another celebration.
When the 2025 Champions Trophy was brought on stage and displayed to the audience, Rohit shared one of his most memorable moments. He said it was bringing the 2024 T20 World Cup trophy to Wankhede after an open-roof bus ride along Marine Drive.
Rohit Promises to Bring Champions Trophy to Wankhede
Rohit Sharma expressed confidence about the team’s chances at the 2025 Champions Trophy, saying, “When we reach Dubai, the wishes of 140 crore people will be with us. We will try to win it and bring the ICC Champions Trophy back to Wankhede.”
The Indian captain made this statement at an event organized by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) to celebrate 50 years of Wankhede Stadium. On this occasion, the Champions Trophy, currently touring participating nations, was displayed at the iconic venue.
A Stage Full of Legends
Rohit stood on stage at Wankhede Stadium alongside Mumbai cricket greats such as Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Ravi Shastri, Sachin Tendulkar, Diana Edulji, and Ajinkya Rahane—all former captains of India. Rohit said his dream was to celebrate India’s T20 World Cup win in 2024 at Wankhede because the venue had always been lucky for him.
The Joy of Celebrating at Home
Rohit recalled celebrating the 2024 T20 World Cup win. “We were locked inside a hotel in Barbados, but celebrating with your people is a different feeling. I knew this could only happen once we returned to Mumbai,” he said.
Rohit spoke of Wankhede’s significance in his career and its unique atmosphere, saying, “Wankhede never disappoints, whether it is India, Mumbai, or Mumbai Indians. The support here is unmatched.”

Dreaming of More Wins
Rohit shared his dream of winning another World Cup. “After the 2024 T20 World Cup, we were stuck in Barbados because of a storm, planning what we’d do when we got back. I insisted that the trophy celebration be at Wankhede,” he said.
He also recalled past celebrations at the venue. “World Cups in 2007 and 2011 were celebrated here. The Wankhede stands were full during our celebration of the 2024 win, and even today, the support is overwhelming.”
Wankhede: A Place of Inspiration
Rohit described his first visit to Wankhede as the moment that sparked his dream of playing cricket for India. “This ground inspires every cricketer. The atmosphere is special, and every player wants to come here and play,” he said.
Rohit received the loudest applause of the evening, second only to cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar.
