MI vs CSK, IPL 2025: Chennai Super Kings defeated Mumbai Indians by 4 wickets in the second match of the doubleheader on Sunday. Batting first, Mumbai Indians scored 155 runs. CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad provided a strong start along with Rachin Ravindra. However, Vignesh Puthur brought Mumbai Indians back into the game by taking 2 wickets. But Suryakumar Yadav made a big mistake by stopping Puthur’s fourth over. Chennai won the match by 4 wickets, scoring the winning run on the first ball of the last over. Here are the 3 major reasons for Mumbai Indians’ defeat.
Mumbai Indians’ Top Batters Fail to Perform
Mumbai Indians, who lost the toss and were asked to bat first, had a poor start. Rohit Sharma was dismissed without scoring a run, bowled out by Khalil Ahmed. Following him, the second opener, Ryan Rickelton, was dismissed for 13 runs. No batsman was able to deliver a strong performance. The highest score in the innings came from Tilak Verma, who made 31 runs. Captain Suryakumar Yadav scored 29 runs, while Deepak Chahar contributed with 28 runs at the end. Without Chahar’s late contribution, the team would have been limited to around 130 runs. Will Jacks scored 11, and Robin Minj scored just 3 runs.
Vignesh Puthur’s Impact Was Cut Short
Rituraj Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra’s 67-run partnership had put Chennai in a strong position. However, Vignesh Puthur, who came in as an impact player for Rohit Sharma, bowled exceptionally well in his debut match. He got Mumbai back in the game by dismissing Shivam Dubey (9) after taking out Rituraj (56). He then took the third wicket, that of Deepak Hooda. Having taken 3 wickets for 32 runs in 3 overs, Suryakumar Yadav made the mistake of stopping his fourth over. Had Puthur continued his spell, he might have increased CSK’s problems by taking another wicket.
MI’s Four Foreign Players Fail to Make an Impact
All four foreign players in Mumbai Indians’ playing XI failed to perform. Ryan Rickelton scored 13 runs, and Will Jacks made just 11 runs. In the bowling department, Trent Boult gave away 27 runs in 3 overs without taking any wickets. Mitchell Santner bowled 2.1 overs, conceding 24 runs without claiming a wicket. Will Jacks managed to take 1 wicket for 32 runs in his 4 overs, but he couldn’t make a significant impact.
