Carlos Alcaraz Soars to Monte Carlo Quarterfinals with Stunning Performance

Categories:

Carlos Alcaraz shows no signs of slowing down at the Rolex Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo. The young Spaniard looked much stronger than in his opening match and easily defeated Daniel Altmaier (ATP No. 84) with a score of 6-3, 6-1. The match lasted less than an hour and a half. Carlitos made fewer mistakes compared to his debut on Wednesday and looked completely in control. He will now face the confident Frenchman Arthur Fils in the quarterfinals — a stage Alcaraz has never reached before at this tournament. Fils earned his spot by dominantly beating Russian star Rublev.

Altmaier Started Strong but Couldn’t Keep Up

Daniel Altmaier, a good clay-court player (his best Grand Slam result was reaching the Round of 16 at Roland Garros in 2020), began the match with confidence. He played aggressively and didn’t shy away from long rallies. The German had earlier beaten veteran Richard Gasquet in the second round. For the first six games, he kept up with Alcaraz.

Alcaraz Takes Control in the First Set

Alcaraz, more used to Monte Carlo’s clay, failed to confirm his first break, but broke again in the seventh game. From there, he played solid tennis and won the first set 6-3. One of the highlights was when he saved a point with his back to the net — classic Carlitos. He looked much more stable than in his first match against Cerundolo.

Second Set: Alcaraz Turns Up the Heat

At the start of the second set, Altmaier had three break points, but Alcaraz stayed calm and won five points in a row to keep his serve. That moment broke the German’s rhythm. After breaking Altmaier’s serve in the fourth game, Carlitos powered through the rest of the set.

Next Up: A Big Test Against Arthur Fils

Alcaraz will now face Arthur Fils in the quarterfinals. The young Frenchman had a big win earlier in the day, beating Andrey Rublev 6-2, 6-3. It will be a tough test for Alcaraz as he continues his clay-court season.
